The Culture of Despair: Venezuela's Latest Attempt to Erase Its Dark Past

For some, the news that El Helicoide prison in Caracas is on track to become a cultural center may come as a welcome respite from the country's dire woes. But for many Venezuelans, the idea is nothing short of sickening.

A Prison with a Past Worth Remembering

El Helicoide was born in the 1950s as a futuristic shopping mall, designed to be the world's first drive-through wonderland. Two miles of ramps looping past 300 shops, cinemas, and even a private club – the audacity of its original vision is almost laughable now.

But the building, never completed due to lack of funds, was seized by Hugo Chávez's regime in 2002. And under Nicolás Maduro, it became an instrument of terror for political prisoners. Cellblocks replaced shopping stalls, and El Helicoide earned its notorious reputation as Venezuela's most infamous torture center.

A Call to Forget?

Acting President Juan Guaidó has touted the transformation of El Helicoide into a cultural hub as part of his efforts to reboot Venezuela's image. Critics argue that this move represents a brazen attempt to erase the country's dark past, leaving behind only a faint echo of the atrocities committed within those walls.

“This is not about preserving history or honoring the victims,” said Maria Fernanda Lopez, director of the Venezuelan Human Rights Observatory. “It's about whitewashing the regime's crimes and presenting a sanitized version of Venezuela to the world.”

The Consequences of Forgetting

Those who refuse to forget the horrors of El Helicoide are not alone. Activists, artists, and ordinary citizens have long held onto memories of loved ones lost to Maduro's regime, refusing to let their stories be reduced to mere footnotes in history.

The cultural center plan has sparked widespread outrage and protests across Venezuela. Can the wounds of the past truly heal without confronting them head-on?
